They Called Me Mister Rules

In years past, I often played golf with my Step-father, Brother, and Brother-in-law.  I did not like it when they would cheat.  They would improve their lie, kick the ball out from behind a tree, or take a Mulligan.  It wasn't just because I was the worst golfer and didn't like to lose.  It was because no one could know what the true score was.  Cheating or changing the rules during the game distorts the results and makes comparisons unreliable.  After a few times of trying to point this out to my comrades, I was dubbed by my Brother, "Mister Rules."

I don't always agree with the rules, but I understand that you must play by them or live in chaos.  It really bothers me that Hillary Clinton is proving Barack Obama's point about how our Government is corrupt in so many ways.  Hillary arguing that winning the popular vote in the Democratic Presidential Primaries is a reason she should be the party's nominee is a clear attempt to spin the facts.  Some of the Caucus States where Obama won don't count popular votes, his name wasn't on the ballot in Michigan, and he never campaigned in Florida, where he most liked would have closed the gap between them.  Still, Hillary wants to claim the popular votes.  Unfortunately for her and her supporters, the Democratic rules say that the Delegates to the Convention decide the nominee, and although the Delegates are within their rights to take the popular vote into account, they are expected to vote for the candidate for whom they were chosen.

I personally think that the popular vote would be the best way to choose any candidate, but rules are rules.  The rules say the Delegates decide!  Face it!  Deal with it!  And if you don't like it, fight to change the rules for the future elections, but don't stoop so low as to say the rules can be changed in the middle of the process.

In 2000 Al Gore won the popular vote and lost the election for President because the Electoral College decides the winner.  The Electoral College is outdated but it is the Rules!  I believe we need to change the rules.  Maybe Hillary can take up both causes when she finally concedes that she has lost.
